AV-Bay Bulkheads for Tinder Rocketry CO2 Systems

AV-Bay bulkheads designed in partnership Tinder Rocketry. The initial offering is specific to their threaded Sparrow CO2 system

The key feature of these bulkheads is the threaded holes that will allow you to screw either the standard Flush mount or the Riser Sparrow device into the bulkhead – creating a mostly airtight seal and allows for easy removal if needed.

Additional holes can be included if there is a requirement to use their Breach product – which will allow you to run E-match wires through the bulkhead to a single or dual line cutter setup.

Airframe Sizes & Plate Thickness

Sparrow bulkhead plates are offered for 54mm, 2.6 Inch and 3 Inch airframe / coupler configurations.

  • Bulkhead ‘plate thickness’: Aluminum plates start as 1/4″ plates and final dimensions are 0.215″.
  • PA12 Plates are 1/4″ with slight relief on internal surfaces with honeycomb patterning.
  • Fully threaded holes to accept Sparrow Flush (7/8″-14 thread) and Sparrow Reach (1″-20 thread) devices.

Hole Configurations

Key for us is to provide various hole configurations to make it easy for our customers to purchase the exact configuration they need to get started quickly without needing to drill holes.

The reality is that there are a number of different hole combinations that will result based on the following options:

  • Single threaded rod vs. dual threaded rods.
  • Using a single Tinder Rocketry Breach device, dual Breach devices or no breach devices.
  • Choosing between the Tinder Rocketry Flush mount Sparrow or Riser Sparrow device.
  • All these options and combinations are then multiplied between three airframe sizes (3″ vs. 2.6″ vs 54mm)

We will limit the initial bulkhead offerings to the following configurations:

  • Single Flush mounted Sparrow device for 54mm & 2.6″ airframes.
  • Dual Flush mounted Sparrow device for 3″ airframes (redundant setup)
  • Dual Breach devices (redundant setup)
  • Dual Threaded Rod holes

Material & Manufacturing

Bulkheads are offered in both 6061 aluminum and PA12 (Polyamide 12)

PA12 (Polyamide 12)

Printed on an industrial HP5600 Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) printer

HP 3D High Reusability (HR) PA 12, enabled by Evonik – Nylon based material known for high strength, durability, and chemical resistance. Great for applications where strength, durability and precision are essential like automotive, aerospace, and consumer goods.

Plates are both Dyed Black and Shot Peened to create a smooth scratch proof surface.

6061 Aluminum

Manufactured on a 3-axic CNC mill

6061 Aluminum is the most widely used heat-treatable aluminum alloy on the planet. Often referred to as the “workhorse” of the industry, it offers a perfect equilibrium of strength, workability, and corrosion resistance.

Why It’s the Industry Standard

  • Corrosion Resistant: It naturally forms a protective oxide layer, making it ideal for outdoor and marine environments (though it’s often anodized for extra protection).

  • Great Strength-to-Weight Ratio: While not as strong as the 7000-series (aerospace grade), it is significantly tougher than the 5000-series, providing structural integrity without the bulk of steel.

  • Excellent Surface Finish: It takes paint and anodizing exceptionally well, allowing for both aesthetic appeal and increased durability.
